get rid of the "display" light inside there. Turn it off, take out the bulb, whatever you have to do. Sure it might make the bottles look pretty for your friends, but all that time your wine is degrading. This goes double for any decorative wine racks or racking furniture in the living areas of your house. If direct sunlight shines on it, forget about putting wine there at all. But even if you can just see it clearly during the day, it means enough light is getting through to hurt your wine. Our advice? Tell your wine to "get a room," and be sure to make it a dark, cool one.

Find a dark place in a lower level – that's the ideal place. Usually a basement where there is no sunlight penetrating, and no heat from mechancials, appliances, etc. (Some people stick a wine rack in their mechanical room - please don't!) You want a cool, dry dark place.
The basement is better because it's usually about 5 degrees cooler than rest of your house, and usually it doesn’t fluctuate as much as the rest of your house. If your basement is different, gets lots of light or does have temperature changes, it's still not good enough. You want a cool space that's not influenced by outside light. Now keep the wine on its side, and make sure that the temperature in there can’t fluctuate.
Of course every wine-loving home should have a wine cellar or refrigerator (call us to learn how affordable it can be!), but for those of you without one, be careful! ]]>Better v. bigger

Budgeting for a Wine Cellar

The other thing not to skimp on is capacity. Don't just think about how much wine you own now, think about how long you have been collecting, and how much longer you will continue to collect. You may have built up your collection quickly, and it may continue to double or more in the foreseeable future. Even if you have been at it a while, remember that many of those wines will be with you a long time. You would hate to have to hurry up and drink your classics to make room for new vintages you would like to own.]]>Vapor Barriers
